BACKGROUND
Luigi Giussani Foundation, herein referred to as LGF, is an indigenous for-impact organization that has been at the forefront of responding to educational challenges in Uganda. Based in Luzira, Kampala, LGF is committed to supporting holistic human development through education based on the value of the person and the principle of subsidiarity, with a preferential option for the poor and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, regardless of location, parentage or biological endowments. LGF is registered in Uganda as a non-profit organization under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act, 2016. It implements programs in the following thematic areas: Teacher Professional Development, Life Skills and Values Enhancement, Foundational Learning and School Culture, Leadership and Management.
The programs are delivered with emphasis on Agency and Wellbeing of the beneficiaries, Safeguarding and Gender Transformative Education, Climate and Environment Education, Research and Continuous Learning, and Advocacy and Partnerships as cross-cutting issues.
POSITION SUMMARY:
LGF is seeking an On-Call Driver that will be attached to its Country Office in Kampala.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The primary objective of the On-Call Driver is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient driving and transportation services to organization staff, visitors, and authorized partners. The applicant will ensure the strict adherence to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and internal vehicle management policies while maintaining the vehicle in pristine condition whenever called upon
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide safe and timely transport services for staff, official visitors, and authorized personnel to designated locations.
- Map out optimal routes in advance based on traffic updates, road conditions, and security briefs.
- Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts and adhere to safety protocols before the vehicle is in motion.
- Handle the safe delivery and collection of official mail, documents, packages, and other cargo as requested.
- Perform daily pre-trip inspections (checking oil levels, coolant, brakes, tyre pressure, lights, and fuel).
- Ensure the assigned vehicle is kept clean, tidy, and washed regularly (both interior and exterior).
- Track and schedule timely routine maintenance, service schedules, and repairs with approved mechanics or service stations as guided by the Procurement Officer.
- Promptly report any mechanical faults, unusual noises, or damage to the supervising Logistics Officer.
- Ensure the vehicle is always equipped with necessary safety tools (spare tyre, jack, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflective triangles).
- Maintain an accurate, up-to-date Vehicle Logbook by recording every trip’s date, destination, purpose, starting/ending mileage, and fuel consumption.
- Manage fuel cards or cash allowances responsibly, ensuring all receipts and fuel logs are kept for reconciliation.
- Ensure the vehicle’s registration, insurance covers, and fitness certificates are valid and updated before expiration.
- Strictly observe national traffic rules, speed limits, and defensive driving regulations.
- Never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication that induces drowsiness.
- In the event of an accident or incident, immediately inform the supervisor, file a formal report, and complete all necessary insurance and police formalities.
- Perform any other assigned dutie

- Promote and actively engage in initiatives such as training, awareness campaigns, and other efforts to enhance team engagement, inclusion, and cohesion within LGF.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, constructive dialogue, and reflection, with the ability to uphold safeguarding principles, organisational values, and relevant policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Licensure
- Minimum Education: O-Level (UCE) Certificate including at least a pass in English. Any qualification above this will be an added advantage.
- Driving License: Valid professional driving permit/license with clean driving record and clean history (classes B and D1)
Technical Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional driving experience, preferably within nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), corporate environments
- Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics and troubleshooting minor technical problems.
- Experience navigating both urban centres and rural/difficult terrains safely.
- A defensive driving certification from a well-recognized training institution is an added advantage

- Reliability & Punctuality: Strict adherence to schedules and timing.
- Professionalism: High degree of integrity, discretion, confidentiality, and excellent manners when handling passengers.
- Communication: Ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English (and local languages relevant to the duty station).
- Situational Awareness: High level of alertness, stress tolerance, and defensive driving skills
