A recent analysis of Uganda’s workforce has revealed that about 7 in every 10 employed workers are engaged in jobs without formal written contracts, raising concerns about job security and workers’ rights. Labour Minister Betty Amongi noted that many employers prefer informal arrangements to reduce operational costs, but such practices expose workers to risks including lack of pensions, health benefits, and legal protections.
Labour rights advocates are calling for stronger enforcement of employment standards to protect workers and improve job quality nationwide.
