Job Description

• Supports qualified boiler operators and engineers with routine monitoring of industrial boilers and auxiliary utility systems.
• Develops practical competency in steam system operations, hazard awareness, and utility maintenance under close supervision.
• Ensures safe working conditions and utility reliability by actively checking equipment, recording operating parameters, and escalating abnormalities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Participate in pre start inspections by checking visible water levels, gauges, valves, fuel systems, feed pumps, piping, and housekeeping conditions.
• Observe steam pressure, water level, fuel supply, combustion conditions, feedwater temperature, pump operation, and alarm indicators.
• Enter operational readings, operating hours, steam conditions, fuel consumption, and water use into utility logs at scheduled intervals.
• Monitor fuel feed mechanisms and storage for biomass systems, or inspect fuel levels and visible leaks for liquid fuel systems.
• Maintain clean boiler room conditions and ensure clear, unobstructed access to emergency equipment.
• Assist with boiler water sampling and support water treatment technicians following approved chemical dosing and blowdown procedures.
• Execute maintenance tasks such as lubrication, cleaning strainers, replacing minor components, and inspecting pumps under supervision after equipment is made safe.
• Identify and escalate abnormal conditions including unstable pressure, unusual vibration, low or high water levels, pump failure, excessive smoke, or leaks.
• Maintain awareness of emergency stops, alarms, fire fighting equipment, isolation points, and evacuation routes.

Education Qualifications & Experience
Education Qualifications

• Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma, National Diploma, National Certificate, Craft Certificate, Trade Test qualification, technical certificate, apprenticeship, or recognized boiler operator training in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Boiler Operations, Plant Maintenance, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Fitting, Production Engineering, Process Technology, or related technical disciplines.
• UACE with Mathematics or science subjects where legally permissible.
• UCE combined with mechanical trade training.
• Any legally mandatory boiler licence or certification remains compulsory before independent operation where required.

Experience

• No prior work experience required.
• Includes a four week onboarding program shadowing an experienced operator under direct supervision.
